Today I had my first English lesson at work. It's on the phone with a teacher - my teacher is Philip, he's really nice. He advised me to use BBC Learning English for short radio and video excerpts. We had a 45-minute conversation, then he analyzed my mistakes: mostly, I'm using too much continuous, present and past - I was living in Paris, I'm going to a gym club... - where it's not needed.
I've been told today that my English is very good and that I don't have to be afraid of leading some conversations in English on the phone. Even if I'm convinced I can be a good deal more spontaneous, it's still nice to hear!
A little treat for Scrat fans (say that quickly several times): you're gonna love the... "Scratchette".
I discovered a new vegetable this week end: the Jerusalem artichoke. In French it's called topinambour: It's really good! With such a funny name it's not obvious that it will taste like artichoke, in this the English name is far more appropriate. I like it that I still have many things to experience in this world.
I've decided to start this journal again, because I'm afraid of losing my ordinary vocabulary since I'm focused on Spanish this year - I'll explain in another post. Furthermore, I finished the English books I bought (the Pern series) and now have a whole pile of books in French to read.
I discovered a singer these days: Jude. There is this song, The asshole song, for instance: it's really beautiful. Takes my breath away each time. It's something great with English, the way the word sounds soft and mild. Take a French translation, it would feel ridiculous - and a German one would be harsh (who remembers this song we used to move our body on when we were 16?) In English, it's sweet and the song makes you cry.
